Organic gardening prevents us from several harms caused by heavy doses of pesticides that are applied on to the foods and also saves our money, which we spend to buy expensive foods from market and malls. While growing own food, you better know what kind of insecticides or sprayers that were used or they were not used at all and also if anything is applied to the soil. A small plot of land can be used to grow variety of vegetables and food. There is much difference in taste and quality if the food is picked up after being ripe and if they are brought from the stores. The former one surely has better taste and quality, for which you spend less money. Following gardening tips can be followed for optimal results.
You can apply mulch to soil to prevent soil erosion as it ensures the moisture quantity is maintained in the soil. Also they decompose over time adding nutrients to the soil; for this reason it is advised to add 2-3 inches of Mulch to soil in start of every season. It prevents rainwater from washing the soil and absorbs the water content of soil. But also take a note that the root should not get in contact with the mulch as the moisture will render the roots and the entire plant rotten.
Compost, which is made up from the recycled wastes from garden and food, can be used instead of fertilizers which are never good for healthy foods. This improves the soil and ensures that no toxins get into the food chain (underground water, soil and plants), as use of pesticides and fertilizers (artificial) is also prevented.
Always choose the plants that suits your climate i.e. temperature, moisture, rainfall, sunlight etc as you need to take lesser care and mortality rate of such plants even in winters is less. You can consider an example of drought resisting plants which are ideal for dry climate lands as high watering will never be required from your side.
Crop rotation is a wide spread and beneficial practice as it ensures – the nutrients remain intact with the soil and pests are controlled. Different crops attract different category of pests, so rotation will ensure no single type will remain forever or grow. It helps retain the nutrients in the soil as different crops require diff nutrients.
Do grow hardwood trees i.e. which shed leaves and bear new ones every year. In spring they’ll bear full leaves preventing sunlight and in winter they become bare, allowing sunshine to reach you. Also it saves a lot of cost for air cooling and warming etc.
Some animals, insects, flies help the plant grow healthily by either killing the harmful ones or by pollinating the plants. Earthworms help aerate the soil ensuring oxygen and water to the roots. You should make sure, such beneficial organisms thrive.
Avoid overwatering and water only n early morning or late in evening as in any other time major portion of water will be evaporated and won’t soak into ground. Use of sprinklers is never recommended since most of water content is lost due to wind pressure, but watering cans and soakers are highly advised since they help the water reach base of the plant.
